A 7th and 8th grade linocut lesson. Linocut is a printmaking technique in which the design is carved into a block of linoleum. Since printmaking allows you to easily make multiples of the same image, themes are often tied to advertising, consumption, and pop culture. Students were encouraged to think of brands, cultural symbols, and personal items that have meaning in their lives. They chose what imagery to use for their prints, creating a piece of art that had personal significance and conceptual weight.

THE PROJECT PROCEDURE:

Students first brainstormed about what imagery to use then drew their design on paper.

Students then used tracing paper to transfer their designs onto a linoleum block, reversing the image.

Students then used carving tools to cut around their design and left raised portions for printing.

THE FINAL RESULTS:

The students printed their designs, experimenting with different colored ink and paper.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

The following documents were developed and used as guides for the project: Lesson Plan - Presentation
